Since most of you following this blog are voracious readers, just like me, I had a question I wanted to throw out there. I find myself obsessed with certain types of books--mainly young adult and middle grade. But I also find myself drawn to the same subjects and topics over and over as I pick the books I want to read. Not that I don't love to break out once in a while and try something new, but certain subjects will definitely make me take a second look at a book every time. I guess you could call this obsessions, since I never seem to grow tired of them. I'm curious what YOUR obsessions are. What kinds of stories always grab your attention? My obsessions include--historical books with magical realism, fairy tale retellings, anything set in the Jane Austen period, good old fashioned ghost stories, any story with a doll in it, and non-fiction involving archeology in any way. I also love non-fiction books about unusual but fascinating subjects. (Ever read The Cosmic Joker by Brian Innes?)

ReplyDeleteI dont think any one genre in particular grabs me. I love all sorts of books. And I think it depends on my mood, sometimes you read to escape, sometimes you read to educate yourself, and sometimes you read to find out what happens NEXT..... I really dont think I can choose!!!! I like books that surprise me (IE The Hunger Games, The Thirteenth Tale or any book by Harlan Coben)
ReplyDeleteI will pretty much read anything. But when I don't know what to read next I'm always drawn to YA fantasy, cozy mysteries, or historical romance (good, not trashy ones). I love anything written by Jane Austen, Georgette Heyer, Mary Stewart, or Elizabeth Peters since I grew up on them.
ReplyDeletemy faveriote book as of late is acttuly a retelling of the little mermaid called midnight pearls by Debbie Viguie.I just got done reading it and its really a good book.You should read it!Books that intrest me are mainly about mermaids,but there are alot of outher books that i like as well.Like Graceling and Fire both are by Kristin Cashore.Another book thats really good is called Time of the Eagle by.sherryl jordan.There all really great books you should read them!

ReplyDeleteI just read the new P.T. Barnum juvenile non-fiction book. FABulous. So good, totally read it. Now. :)
ReplyDeleteThere's a huge craze out right now for urban fantasy. I do NOT like it at all. Seriously, every time I give in and try it I regret it.
I also like fractured fairy tales...to a point. I also love period piece type books. I'm reading non-fiction right now about the history of birthing/having children. It's hilarious all though sometimes a little too much information.
For junk food I like a cutesy little plot with a sweet romance where I don't have to think, but my favorite books are classic literature.
Oh, huge fan of well-written spy/assassin books. Which explains why I'm writing one. There are very few good ones out there, though. My favorite lately was teh Ranger's Apprentice but it's driving me NUTS by having a teeny tiny book come out every year. ugh.
Benjamin wants me to say,he likes young adult fantasy books that are really intense. The climax has to take at least 200 pages. Examples: Hunger Games, and The Abhorsen Series. He says he likes them because "you get this flood of emotion that keeps on going and you just can't put it down."
